This article describes what Epigenetics is, how our perceptions change our biology, and how your knowledge and awareness of your perceptions can be the catalyst for transformation and lasting change.
Can you imagine yourself, who you are, as an intangible unchanging energy presence and your body as the receiver of who you are and the vehicle of its expression?
Dr. Bruce Lipton is the cell biologist at Stanford Medical School who did groundbreaking stem cell research that underlies processes known as the science of Epigenetics. You can read a report published by the National Institutes of Health Dr. Lipton's research here
Our old scientific view of what would happen in our lives biologically was based in genetic determinism, the belief that genes control our biology, that we could not pick or change the genes we inherited. This view led to the notion that we are victims of our heredity.
The groundbreaking research of Dr. Bruce Lipton found that genetic activity is controlled by our environment and our perceptions of our environment. Genes alone do not control our fate. The environment and our perception of the environment actually select the genetic activity of the cell.
Let's walk through this one step at a time.
Each human body is a community of 50 trillion cells.
The fate of each cell is controlled by the conditions of the environment.
The environment the cell lives in is blood.
Our brains determine what chemicals are in the blood.
The brain is a chemist.
Our brains use our perceptions to determine what is secreted into the blood, the cell environment.
The genes of the cell give us potentials.
Which potentials are expressed depends upon the composition of the environment around the cell, or the blood.
Epi means above. Epigenetics means the control of the genes is not within the gene but within the blood.
The brain translates your perception into a chemistry that complements the perception. The chemistry is released into the blood. The blood composition is the result of the human’s perception of the environment.
Our consciousness is translated into biology via the culture medium of the cells, the blood.
Knowledge is Power
Since our genes activity is not determined by the gene itself but rather by the environment for the cell in which the gene exists, and since the environment and perceptions of the environment are within our control, we can use our ability to change the environment and our perceptions of the environment to change the activity of our genes.
Techniques such as visualization, affirmations, and mindfulness practices are all methods with which we can harness the power of our consciousness to influence our physical health.
In my next article, WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?, I offer a story that demonstrates exactly how this process unfolds.
You are amazing by the way. Thanks for staying with me thus far.
